Buy The World is a shared interactive globe. People can look around, then claim a digital map square for nothing and put a photo, caption or link on a place that means something to them. A square is held only while its shield holds, and the one thing on the site with a price is protection against ever losing it.
The short version
Buy The World turns personal places into a public map. A person can claim a square near a hometown, a meeting place or a trip for free, add what they want to show there, and send a public link to that point on the globe. They keep it by coming back: a claim carries a 24-hour shield that its holder extends by hand, and a square whose shield has lapsed can be claimed by anybody else.
Facts
- Exploring the map is free and does not require an account.
- Claiming a square is free too. An account is an email address and a six-digit code, and one account may claim one square an hour.
- A claim carries a shield of 24 hours. The holder puts another 24 hours on it by hand, a button that returns every 6 hours. When a shield lapses, anybody may claim that square.
- The only thing with a price is protection: $2.00 USD once, for one square, permanent. A protected square can never be claimed by anybody. There is no subscription.
- A square is a licence to display content on a digital map, not ownership of physical land.
- Each square protected adds 3.65 days to the map's public countdown. Claiming is free and adds nothing. If that countdown ends, the map stops being published.
